The aim of this study is to examine the relationship of emotional intelligence (EI) and the job performance of employees in providing services in air traffic. An effort was made to determine the degree of integration and unique contribution to the self-assessment dimensions of EI trough evaluations of work efficiency collected from two sources: self-assessment and assessment of direct superior leaders (managers). The Emotional Skills Competence Questionnaire (ESCQ-45) was used, which measures the ability to observe and understand emotions, the ability to express and name the emotions and ability to control and manage emotions. For estimation of work efficiency of airport employees there are specially designed scales for estimating the frequency of critical behavior, for two dimensions of success: the quality of conducted work and attitude toward colleagues, passengers and external associates. The instruments were applied on a larger sample of seasonal airport employees and have showed satisfactory reliability. The results confirm the hypothesis about the importance of EI for success in work. It is more closely associated with self-assessments of work efficiency than the assessment of a superior leader. At the same time, EI to a significantly greater extent anticipated success of the dimension of relations with colleagues, passengers and external associates than the dimension of the quality of work performed. Among the various capabilities of the construct of EI the biggest contribution of the quality of the relationships and interactions with others shows the ability to perceive and understand emotions, or what is also known as emotional sensitivity. These findings indicate that in the recruitment procedures should be taken into account and the ability of the construct of EI, but also point to the potential benefits that may have training programs intended for staff development and emotional competencies, especially for those employees whose jobs involve working with other people.
