Main topic of this master thesis is conducted as research approach to methods of forensic accounting. Base of research is theoretical as well as practical examination of the mentioned topic. Business forensics and forensic accounting are two rather new disciplines, but fraud, embezzlement, manipulation and other criminal acts date back to ancient times. There are number of methods that forensic accountants apply with aim of early detection and prevention of fraud, because early detection and prevention is always preferable to intervention after an event has already occurred. Some of the methods that are discussed in detail and applied on practical examples are: horizontal analysis, ratio analysis, Benford's law, theory of relative size factors (RFS), computer assisted auditing tools (CAATs), and data mining techniques. Practical examination is carried through case studies of some of the greatest financial scandals to which methods of forensic accounting are applied, with purpose of pointing out the importance of forensic accounting profession and their methods. Forensic accounting can be seen as a “missing link” in the accounting profession, which, if applied right, can give further improvements in detection and prevention of financial fraud and embezzlement. Thesis includes recommendations for further development and wider application of forensic methods in accounting practices, as well as proposal for future transformation of forensic accountant profession as a supervisory body over auditing practices.
