Abstract (english)
The development of agriculture and rural areas is one of the most important interests in any country. It is even more important in Croatia due to the decades-long challenges faced by domestic agricultural production, the ever-increasing depopulation of Croatian villages and the aggravation of problems related to climate change. In this chapter, the attitudes of 1,014 respondents from Croatia participating in the Eurobarometer survey were analysed and compared with the attitudes of respondents... More from other European Union countries (the total sample comprises of 26,511 participants). At the same time, attitudes towards the importance of agricultural development in rural areas, the role of agricultural producers, the desired characteristics of agricultural and organic products and the relationship between agriculture and climate change were analysed. Despite the similarities and trends in the responses in most of the analysed areas, there were evident differences between the developed and less developed EU members and between the member states from the southern part of the European Union. In particular, Croatian respondents showed a positive attitude towards organic and ecologically produced agricultural products and the need to improve the quality of life in rural areas. This positive attitude can serve as a glimmer of hope and an incentive to invest additional efforts in the development of this part of the economy. Less
