Abstract
The following bachelor thesis focuses on psychological impacts on trading performance in order to better understand the statistics surrounding retail traders. It explores various aspects of profitable and unprofitable trading with a focus on technical analysis and the errors made motivated by cognitive biases. The impacts of these errors on a strategy with positive expectancy are shown by adjusted backtests which simulate the errors made. The results show that psychologically-motivated errors which seek to reduce losses and provide higher win rates produce seemingly great results in the short term, but are quickly diminished when even a small losing streak occurs. On the other hand, the original strategy following the same method of entry captured bigger winners and provided larger P&L returns, even with a much smaller win rate, due to the skew in average risk to reward ratio. The correct ways of thinking of profitable traders are explored and explained, and suggestions are given on achieving this mental framework to minimize similar trading errors.
