Abstract
This thesis dives into the notion of multi-level marketing (MLM), concentrating on society's perspective of it and the common misunderstanding of it, with the City of Rijeka citizens as subjects of the empirical research. The theoretical framework is examined through the work of numerous authors. MLM was first established as a business strategy that distributes its goods and services outside of a traditional retail chain while providing its employees the opportunity to be their own boss, but it has been criticized since its model is similar to that of unlawful pyramid schemes. Furthermore, the difference between MLM and illegal pyramid schemes is thoroughly analysed, exploring previous research. The empirical research was conducted through a questionnaire involving 134 of the City of Rijeka citizens. It gathered vital information, with respondents sharing their thoughts and feelings regarding MLM. The research sheds light on how society's misperception of MLM results from their lack of understanding of the distinction between MLM and unlawful pyramid schemes.
