Abstract
This master's thesis examines the challenges to sustainable development faced by small, family-owned enterprise and examines the implementation of the sustainable business model in an action research case study of a Croatia based company. Businesses are emphasising sustainable development more and more, but small family-owned businesses have a particularly tough time achieving it due to their limited resources, lack of knowledge, and competing goals. This thesis includes a review of the literature on sustainable development in small family-owned firms as well as case study of company in question with diverse industries that have successfully adopted sustainable business model and practices. The study's findings suggest that small family-owned businesses encounter difficulties with regard to supply chain management, stakeholder expectations, and a lack of resources but also struggle with the implementation of CSR agenda when compared to large companies. The thesis finishes with suggestions for small, family-run businesses looking to address these issues and make sustainability a priority in their corporate strategy. This study advances knowledge of sustainable development in small family-owned enterprises operating in a variety of industries and emphasises the significance of sustainable business practises for preserving their long-term sustainability.
