Abstract
This study examines the impact of the resource curse on the tourism sector in three countries that have undergone the transition from socialist to capitalist markets and are now highincome countries: Croatia, Slovenia, and the Czechia. The results of the analysis show that Croatia has a significantly higher dependence of GDP on the tourism sector compared to the other countries studied. This suggests that Croatia does indeed exhibit symptoms of Dutch disease, and in the event of a sudden shock or distortion, the entire economy will be affected. A common feature of all the countries studied is that they are immune, or will soon be immune, to currency fluctuations because they are members of the euro area and currency unions are able to absorb potential distortions in exchange rates. But it should not be concluded that they are immune to the effects of the resource curse in general. If not sustainably managed, tourism can also be considered a non-renewable resource that has irreversible devastating effects on the environment and shares the negative economic impacts of the fossil fuel industry. Depending on the sustainability of the tourism sector and the increase in wealth, the Croatian government will have to make structural changes to ensure the stability of the economy.
