Waste generation exists from ancient times but only recently became a major threat and problem for the Earth as a whole as well as for each one of us independently. Economic growth and growing consumption lead to a steady increase in the amount of waste which causes harmful emissions and affects human health and the environment. The mentioned impact depends on the amount and waste properties as well as on the way it is being managed. Tourism contributes substantially to municipal solid waste generation, yet the waste from tourism systematically remains hidden behind residential waste flows. There is a lack of studies that quantify how much the tourist population engages in total municipal solid waste (MSW) and separately collected recyclables. This thesis aims is to estimate the impact of the tourist population on municipal solid waste (both total and separately collected) since according to United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) estimations, 4.8 million tons (14% of all solid waste) is produced each year solely by tourists. Since the main object in this thesis will cover data from 2019 it is important to mention that according to data gathered from Eurostat, 502 kilograms of municipal waste per capita was generated in the EU. Croatia is ranked 11th on the list of most generated waste countries in the EU with 445 kilograms per capita in 2019. When this number is enlarged by tourist inflow and waste generated by it, communal infrastructure in tourism destinations is mostly not intended for such a large concentration of people – tourists in short periods during the year. This mostly occurs during the summer season which represents a base situation in which all possible problems arise. One of the biggest Croatian islands, Krk, despite many challenges managed to overcome problems and difficulties of growing waste generation and tourism inflow and it is assumed that it will continue to do so in the future years due to its successful management, leadership and applied practices.
