Preserving family wealth for more than three generations is a worldwide problem. The first generation is the hard-working one. It creates wealth and a better life for its offspring. The second generation is the one that “breaks it or makes it”. Either it creates more wealth, or it destroys the wealth. The wealth can be destroyed slowly or faster but it all comes into the same place - the third generation is back in the position the first one was. In order to preserve family wealth, it is important to realise that it is not only made out of financial (material) capital but also from human and intellectual capital. Financial capital should be used as a tool for the improvement of human and intellectual capital. Every family, like every organisation, can flourish better if it has good financial support. Over the years, families have based their wealth creation on the fiat system but in 2009 a new currency arises - bitcoin. Bitcoin is new money that is perceived as sound money, where gold is old sound money, that enables people to transact value between themselves freely with no restrictions. Since its inception, economists, financiers and an increasing number of regular citizens have started to discuss again the importance of sound money - money that is freely chosen by the people on the market and whose value is determined through market interaction aided by self-correcting mechanism inherent in the free market system and not manipulated my government’s interventions. The fiat system, controlled by interest groups (e.g. politicians, central and commercial bankers) is making families poorer when they expand the money supply. Not only does it make people poorer, but it is also stealing their time because now they must work more to substitute decreased wealth. Bitcoin on the other hand is making families richer. It has a determined maximum supply so its scarcity is pushing the value up. Family members now have more time to spend together and develop their human and intellectual capital. Nevertheless, family members and especially their leaders should always be curious and ready to act if something drastically changes in the world and bitcoin’s network. We as humans don’t know what we don’t know so there is never 100% sureness that things will stay the way they are now. Everything we do in life is speculation and that applies also to money. With speculation comes risk. Here, the risk is that bitcoin’s network will somehow fail and we might lose our wealth. We must attribute some possibility to this and act accordingly.
