Abstract
Found in every international economy textbook, the Big Mac Index is widely known as a ‘light-hearted’ guide to understanding the Purchasing Power Parity theory. Published by The Economist in 1986 it wasn’t until 2011 that the magazine took into account differences in productivity between countries and constructed its GDP-adjusted Big Mac Index. Built on the Penn Effect, adjusted Big Mac Index acknowledges the role each country’s price levels play in forming Big Mac prices. The process of calculating the adjusted BMI involves a lot more data and steps than its ‘raw’ BMI counterpart, and The Economist has done it on 49 countries so far. The purpose of this thesis is to provide theoretical background behind the Big Mac Index, the original and the adjusted version, and to calculate GDP-adjusted BMI for Croatia. The results place Croatian’s national currency as either under- or overvalued relative to the index of other currencies, as well as consistently undervalued against euro and US dollar.

Big Mac Indeks se danas smatra neizostavnim dijelom svakog udžbenika o međunarodnoj ekonomiji, a popularnost je stekao kao jednostavan vizualan prikaz pariteta kupovne moći. Prvi put je izdan 1986. godine u The Economist časopisu, a 2011. godine je nadograđen s verzijom indeksa korigiranu za BDP. Potrebu za korekcijom je potaknulo zapažanje o povezanosti razina cijena u državi i njenog BDP per capita, u literaturi poznato kao Penn efekt, stoga noviji indeks povezuje utjecaj BDP-a pojedine države na cijenu Big Mac hamburgera. Izračun korigiranog indeksa zahtijeva više podataka i koraka naspram tradicionalnog te se rezultati trenutno mogu pronaći za samo 49 država. Cilj ovog rada je dati uvid u teoriju koja gradi Big Mac Indeks, od zakona jedne cijene do pariteta kupovne moći, te izračunati korigiranu verziju Indeksa za Hrvatsku. Dobiveni rezultati pokazuju da je Hrvatska nacionalna valuta konstantno podcijenjena naspram eura i američkog dolara.
