Natural gas is an extremely important factor on the energy market and it is also expected that it will have a leading role in the transitional period towards using energy with low-emission greenhouse gases. Technological progress has enabled development of different gas trading systems, and besides the traditional mode of transport through pipelines, there is also everincreasing use of LNG trade, whose transportation is relatively efficient due to the process of liquefaction, which means that the natural gas is temporarily converted into a liquid state, which significantly reduces its volume. The characteristic of that trade is growing flexibility, which is why many new participants on the LNG market decide to build floating terminals, whose cost is lower than the land-based terminals and they can become operational in the shorter term. Floating LNG terminal is also to be built in Omišalj on the island of Krk. That project has been declared as strategic by the government of Republic of Croatia and it is also a part of Projects of Common Interest (PCI) of European Union, which has already financially supported the project in terms of obtaining documentation and ship purchasing. The central hypothesis is that the terminal would have its economic viability on the edge as the best-case scenario. Although the effects for Croatia could be positive in terms of stronger positioning on LNG and the gas market in general, lowering gas prices and diversifying supply sources on domestic and regional market, it is highly questionable whether there will be enough commercial interest to lease required capacities, bearing in mind that LNG is more expensive than the pipeline gas. Although leasing stipulations are not a direct responsibility of LNG Hrvatska but gas retailers, the lack of interest would disable the project holder to fulfill financial demands and the implementation of the project would be at stake. The hypothesis is also that the second stage of the project, that includes the land-based terminal with larger regasification and storage capacities, would not be economically justified, because according to the development projections of LNG market and the activities of other countries in Central and Southeast Europe, such terminal would not have been used to the appropriate extent and its building costs would be well beyond its projected benefits.
